A small, pyriform to subglobose puffballs, typically 15-35 mm high, often in dense clusters found on decaying wood and some times from the ground growing from dead tree roots.

Peridium: Has a distinct reticulate-areolate pattern the polygonal plates separated by darker fissures containing long dark spines. Colour ranges from pale tan to warm brown. The surface dry and minutely spiny.
Subgleba: The lower portion is slightly sterile and whitish, forming a short pseudostipe-like base.
Gleba: White and firm when immature, turning olive-brown at maturity.
