Hydnodontaceae contains several genera of resupinate wood‑decaying fungi, many of which produce toothed, granular, or slightly spiny hymenial surfaces rather than the smooth corticioid crusts typical of other Trechisporales. They are widespread, often overlooked, and play a major role in decomposition of woody debris, humus formation, and nutrient cycling.

A subtle but diverse genus of resupinate to odontioid wood-decay fungi forming thin white to cream crusts or, in some species, finely toothed or even coral-like structures on fallen wood, bark, litter, or soil.
