A large, robust, brown‑squamulose species of Nothofagus forest, with a dry, densely tufted date‑brown cap and pale grey lamellae. Stipe stout, pale yellow‑brown above, the lower half encircled by thick dark‑brown squamulose girdles, often forming a collar.

Pileus: 35-100 mm (often larger), rounded then convex, fleshy, dry, not hygrophanous. Surface densely covered with thick, date‑brown to dark yellow‑brown squamules; young caps almost downy. Margin with brown tufts in youth.
Lamellae: Pale grey, moderately crowded (L = 46, l = 1–2), narrowly emarginate to adnate.
Stipe: 50-100 x 8-20 mm, cylindrical to clavate, sometimes tapering; robust. Colour pale yellow‑brown; lower half with thick, dark‑brown squamulose girdles, sometimes forming a collar. Base with white mycelial felt and rhizoids.
Veil: Date‑brown to yellow‑brown, copious; cortina white.
Context: Whitish to pale tan.
Odour/taste: Odour absent; taste faint, sometimes with a bitter aftertaste.
