Colour: Brownish‑grey, grey‑brown, smoky grey, or mouse‑grey; paler toward the tips. Dried material becomes paler grey‑buff.
Surface: Smooth to faintly wrinkled; sometimes with shallow longitudinal folds on older branches.
Base: Short, compact, whitish to pale grey; often forming a dense, fibrous attachment to humus.
