Fruitbodies: Coralloid, 20–60 mm tall, sparsely to moderately branched, forming loose, open clusters. Branches slender, subcylindrical to slightly flattened, often irregularly arranged. Overall colour grey‑white, pale grey, or grey‑buff, sometimes with faint brownish or smoky tones. Texture brittle, snapping cleanly.
Apex: Rounded or bluntly forked; tips usually paler than the branches, sometimes almost white.
Colour: Grey‑white, pale grey, grey‑buff, or cream‑grey; drying paler or slightly yellowish.
Surface: Smooth to faintly pruinose; occasionally with very fine hispid or roughened patches under magnification (the feature behind the epithet hispidulosa). Older branches may show slight wrinkling.
Base: Short, compact, whitish; not distinctly stalked.
Size: Clusters 20–60 mm tall and 10–40 mm wide.
Growth habit:
Solitary or in small scattered groups; often forming loose tufts rather than dense corals.
Common name: None.
Habitat: Moist, shaded forest; among leaf litter, humus, or moss, often in mixed broadleaf–podocarp forest.
Substrate: Soil or humus; occasionally on well‑rotted wood.
Distribution: Reported from North America and Australasia. New Zealand material is poorly documented and may represent similar grey Clavulina taxa rather than true C. hispidulosa.
Season: Autumn.
Biostatus: Uncertain in New Zealand (possibly misapplied; local grey forms may represent undescribed species).
Edible: Unknown; not recomended.
