G. Stev. 1962
Of the two similar looking species, that is A. karea. This one is recognised by the dark brown cap with large light-brown irregular shaped veil fragments.
Cap: 30-130 mm diameter, convex to plano‑convex then centrally depressed. Colour buff to dark grey to greyish‑sepia, often with dusky brownish‑grey radial streaks. Surface viscid when young or wet, drying with age. Universal‑veil remnants form small to extensive, irregular, felted patches, dull greyish‑sepia to sepia, sometimes scab‑like, rarely arranged concentrically.
Gills: White to cream, crowded, free, 6–10 mm deep. Short gills subtruncate.
Stipe: 40-140 mm tall x 5-25 mm thick, narrowing upward, hollow, arising from a sub‑bulbous or abruptly bulbous base (10-30 mm). Above ring: white, sparsely floccose, sometimes breaking into transverse bands. Below ring: smooth or breaking into bands or fibrillose scales, white to buff or greyish sepia streaked with mouse‑grey.
Ring: Membranous, striate, white to buff or greyish sepia, sometimes lavender‑grey. Often pendulous, later adhering to the stipe or tearing and sticking to the cap margin.
Volva: At the base: band or rim of buff to greyish‑sepia volval remnants. On the cap: felted patches of globose to clavate cells, dull greyish‑sepia.
Flesh: White or mouse‑grey beneath the disc, sometimes with a grey line above the gills.
