A deep vinaceous‑brown, wood‑rotting agaric with a dry, coarsely fibrillose cap, attached gills, and finely spiny spores. Endemic to New Zealand.

Cap: 20-60 mm diameter, occasionally larger. Convex to plano‑convex, sometimes slightly depressed with age. Colour deep vinaceous‑brown, reddish‑brown, or wine‑coloured; often darker at the disc. Surface dry, coarsely fibrillose to scaly, especially toward the centre. Margin even to slightly uplifted; may become irregular or split in older specimens.
Gills: Adnexed to adnate (attached), never free. Crowded, narrow. Colour pale cream to whitish, sometimes faintly pinkish with age. Short gills common.
Stem: 25-60 mm x 3-7 mm, equal or slightly swollen at the base. Colour vinaceous‑brown to reddish‑brown, matching or slightly paler than the cap. Surface dry, fibrillose, sometimes with darker scales. Ring absent; no persistent veil structures. Base often with white mycelium.
Flesh: Thin, pale cream to light brown. Does not bruise or change colour noticeably. Odour and taste indistinct.
