This is one of two fungi that are a bit of a curiosity. The New Zealand literature does not describe them yet in Australia these two are lumped in with Hygrocybe asatogala.

Even through the shape of the fruiting body's are quite different and more importantly the spores are of different sizes and shaped.

Its been suggested this fungus goes throught a range of colour as it ages but I have seen no evadance of this other then to turn black.
