A dark brown radially fibrillose species with fimbriate gills and twinned-tetrahedral spores; common in NZ native and exotic forests.

Pileus: 15-45 mm diam., hemispherical when young, becoming convex or campanulate, sometimes with a distinct small umbo, or occasionally slightly depressed at the centre. Dark brown, covered withradially arranged, ± repent soot-brown fibrils. Margin striate and projecting beyond the gills. Dry.
Lamellae: adnexed to free, moderately crowded. Whitish to pale pink, becoming pink. Edges white, later brownish, fimbriate.
Stipe: 40-70(-150) x (2)3-8 mm, cylindrical, white or with a soot‑brown tinge. Base often with white mycelial weft. Fibrillose, dry, hollow, fragile.
Context: brownish, watery.
Odour/taste: not distinctive.
