Cantharellaceae includes some of the best tasting edible mushrooms unfortunately in New Zealand this is not the case. These mycorrhizal fungi have in most cases vase-shaped or funnel-shaped fruiting body's, brightly coloured, sterile on one side (the cap) and with spore bearing surfaces on the other. These surfaces may be smooth, wrinkled, veined or primitively gilled.
