This has some similarities to Amanita nigrescens though larger and without a ring on the stipe or veil fragment on the cap.

Cap: 30-90 mm diameter, convex to plano‑convex, sometimes shallowly depressed in age. Colour dark grey‑brown, mouse‑grey, or greyish sepia, often darker at the disc. Surface dry to slightly tacky, not strongly viscid. Universal‑veil remnants form low, irregular, felted patches or granular warts, coloured dark greyish sepia to fuscous. These patches are often irregularly scattered, not arranged concentrically. Margin short‑striate, sometimes splitting.
Gills: White to pale cream, free, crowded, 6-9 mm deep. Short gills subtruncate. Edges smooth to slightly uneven.
Stipe: 40-110 mm tall x 6-18 mm thick, hollow or partially hollow. Colour white to pale buff or pale greyish sepia. Upper stipe finely floccose; lower stipe smooth or faintly fibrillose. Base sub‑bulbous to bulbous (10-25 mm wide). Ring present, white to pale buff, membranous, often striate on the upper surface.
Volva: At the base: a rim or band of greyish‑sepia volval material, sometimes forming a low collar. On the cap: volval patches composed of globose to clavate cells, dull greyish sepia.
Flesh: White, sometimes with pale grey tones beneath the disc. Odour not distinctive.
